The months of November, December and January are probably the time of the year when respiratory disease is highest. This year, 2023 we see unusually longer recovery periods, sometime up to several weeks.
Most of us can develop acute cold symptoms during the winter. The good question is why some people hardly get sick, and other get acute symptoms that can last for several weeks?
When a healthy body is exposed to external pathogens (virus, bacteria) the body’s immune system should automatically respond to them. If the immune system is strong, a person may not even notice the response. Maybe that person will feel a bit of low energy, or lower appetite, and a bit of soreness in the throat, or tension in the shoulders for a day or so, but symptoms will not develop more than that.
On average, healthy immune system will take up to 7 days to settle down these symptoms, even if one will not do anything about it.
Today, many people can not recover from the acute symptoms for many weeks. Why?
There can be many reasons. Let us look at some of them.
First, we need to understand that our body is a universe on its own. Each of us is build out of individual set up of energies that will be hard to find in another being. That how unique each of us are.
Then we need to understand that the external world also is made off infinite combinations of energies, and we, humans are in constant communication with those energies.
All creation can be energetically measured from hot to warm, to neutral, to cool, and to cold.
Constitutionally, we are all born with different inclinations toward hot or cold constitutions.
What we eat, drink, supplement, medicate also has its very specific energies and the same food or supplement may affect different people in different ways.
How we choose our food and medication during acute symptoms may determine how fast or slow we can get well.
Wrong choices will deplete the body’s energy and create more sickness, and similar with right choices, the body will heal faster. For example, during the acute symptoms if your body is very warm, using coffee that has a hot energy, may cause your body become warmer, and create more heat. More heat will only worsening the acute symptoms.
It is a simple example, but in real life it can be a bit more complex. The best way to understand this is by learning about different ways of energy in the food and in the body from TCM (traditional chines medicine).
Other aspects that can contribute to the changes in the defensive energy of the body is the way we think and react to outside events. Our mental and emotional response may drain or build our inner energy. A lifestyle including being “emotionally“ upset can decrease the level of defense against pathogens.
Another aspect that can contribute to prolonged acute symptoms is diet. During the acute symptoms we usually do not feel so hungry. In this case,” trying” to eat will only create more problems and turn food into unwanted mucus. If there is no hunger, it is because the body need its energy elsewhere. The stomach is not ready to digest, that is why you will not have an appetite. A wise way will be to abstain from the food until a good appetite is back.
Another thing that can prolong the recovery is eating food that your body cannot tolerate. You, usually will recognize this kind of food by your body’s reactions to it like lack of energy, sleapiness after eating, or allergic reactions. Staying away from such food may help to speed up your recovery.
In general, it will be wise to stay away from sugar and sugary food, cold food, heavy to digest food and too much of raw food.
The prolonged acute symptoms are an indication on its own that there is no harmony between you and your external environment. If the body struggles to recover, it is because something is preventing it from the recovery, there is an obstacle.
Often, but not always the opposite is needed to balance the body, and help the recovery. This means if something is too cold, it needs to be warmed up, and if something is too warm, it needs to cool down. Simple logic, isn’t it?
Almost all Chronic conditions are a bit more complex than this example. In chronic situations there may be a mixture of cold and warm. If your symptoms are not improving for a long time, it is better to consult a professional TCM practitioner who can help you to figure out what causes the problem, and give you the right recommendations. It is worthy of time and money, because wrong choices may lead you to deeper problems and longer recovery.
In TCM (traditional Chine’s medicine) we have a system that investigates the patterns for understanding disease. To find the correct cure it is necessary to understand pathology, aetiology, and patterns of the disease.
For example, TCM has a theory of six stages of acute disease that divided into Yin (cold) and Yang(hot) categories. Each category has three stages that each have multiple prescription of herbs, diet, and other therapies.
Example, if a person who is going through the third Yin cold stage will get the herbs that treat the third Yang warm stage, it will cause worsening of the symptoms, and can even cause death. Third stage is the extreme stages. I took it as an example here, because extreme makes It obvious.
I hope you can see how taking the random supplements, not looking at the other influential aspects of internal/external environment can lead to prolonged symptoms.
In my opinion, one of the reasons why so many people get prolonged acute condition is because they turn to google to look for remedial recommendations. What, do you think will be the chance that google will give you the right suggestions without really knowing who you are? Even professionals with experience may not always find the right answer right away.
One thing is for sure, when recovery of acute symptoms is delated, it is not because it is a special virus case, or because everyone else around is also sick, or you tried everything and nothing works, or other comforting justifications.
Recovery is delayed because the obstacles on the way to the recovery is not removed.
The fact is this: our body is made to heal and if nothing abstract the healing, it will heal!
